Course Overview
Hornsea Golf Club was established as a members’ club in 1898 and moved to its present site in 1908. The course was designed by Sandy Herd and subsequently modified in its early years by Dr Alister Mackenzie and James Braid. Located just 1 mile from the sea on the East Coast of Yorkshire Hornsea Golf Club is a fast-running parkland golf course, providing a stern yet enjoyable challenge for all visitors. Due to the firm nature of the course, it traditionally plays a bit shorter than the 6647 yards stated on the scorecard. A regular feature on the course are the furrows & ridges on the fairways which often leave golfers carefully considering uphill and downhill lies for approach shots. The first four holes stretch out towards an iconic water tower positioned on the golf course. They consist of 3 par 4’s under 330 yards & a reachable par 5 which alongside the help of the prevailing wind, provide a gentle start to the round. This changes from the 6th onwards with a nice blend of uphill holes & doglegs, as well as a change of wind direction to increase the level of difficulty for each shot. Water & strategic bunkering await any approach shots lacking accuracy or conviction. Being situated on the Yorkshire coast, Hornsea has many features traditionally associated with links golf including extensive gorse & wind blasted thorn. Visitors can also enjoy the use of the on-site driving range, short game area & putting green. The clubhouse provides a perfect spot for a pre-round bite to eat or to reflect on the round over a great selection of beers, wines, sprits & soft drinks.
