Former host of the New Orleans Open from 1963-1988, Lakewood Golf Club in New Orleans, Louisiana, is an 18-hole, championship golf course with a storied history. PGA TOUR legends such as Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Tom Watson have all walked off the 18th green at Lakewood as champions of the New Orleans Open. Lakewood Golf Club was designed by Robert B. Harris in 1961 and quickly became one of the best golf courses in the NOLA area. Recent updates by respected golf architect Ron Garl helped revitalize Lakewood Golf Club with improvements to the fairways, greens and tee boxes. The signature 18th hole at Lakewood features one of the most iconic bunkers in the world. Named “Fire in the Hole,” the 18th at Lakewood is a tribute to New Orleans Firefighters with a flame-shaped bunker filled with red sand protecting the green.
