Course Overview
Certainly one of the best and most challenging nine-hole golf courses in the state, Gleneagle Golf Course at McLaren park is considered a must-play in the San Francisco area. The course attracts all sorts of golfers, from politicians and celebrities to typical muni players. Opened in 1962, the course was originally designed by Jack Fleming, and then renovated in 2010 by George Waters. Although Gleneagles has just nine holes, many play it as an 18-hole course because there are two sets of tee boxes — blue out, yellow in — that can dramatically change the character of a hole. Always in good condition, the course has narrow fairways lined by thick brush and difficult, small greens. The course is hilly with hardly a level lie, and it's easy to find trouble. The sixth is one of the most difficult par 5s in the state. It's a severe dogleg left that plays 577 yards. The ninth is another par 5, and although it's just 442 yards, it's no pushover. The hole, because it plays severely uphill, plays much longer than its yardage, and it's usually into the wind. Another attraction of Gleneagles at McLaren Park is the 19th Hole, a cozy, Scottish-style pub house with a great selection of single-malt Scotch and a patio that overlooks the bay.
