Course Overview
Perhaps the more scenic of the two military golf courses at Fort Sam Houston. The Salado del Rio Course has classic roots and a long history combined with beautiful views of the countryside. With a few blind shots and more difficult water hazards, it's also the more difficult of the two layouts at Fort Sam Houston, which also includes the La Loma Course. What they both have in common are their A.W. Tillinghast roots. The classic architect designed 18 holes at the facility back in the 1930s, but when more holes were added, culminating with the final nine by Ralph Plummer in 1974, the final 36 holes were divided into two course. Salado del Rio holes 1-3 and 13-18 were all designed by Tillinghast. That means subtle push-up greens among a traditional layout that features native live oaks, ponds and streams. Both courses at the base course are open to the public (access is not restricted), and green fees are very reasonable. The facility also has a beautiful clubhouse with reasonable prices on food and drink, lighted and covered driving range and very affordable lessons from its professional staff.
