Course overview
Assiniboine Golf Club in Winnipeg is a unique and playable 9-hole course. One of Winnipeg s oldest clubs, it welcomes public tee times without restrictions. Located west of Polo Park and just a couple of miles from Winnipeg International Airport, Assiniboine Golf Club is ideal for a quick nine for anyone going to or coming from the airport, and it is also a fine choice for beginners and novices. This has long been the home course of many fine Manitoba amateur golfers. Golf course architecture aficionados appreciate Assiniboine Golf Club s fascinating history that dates back to 1917 and includes a renovation by Stanley Thompson, Canada s greatest course architect. Thompson s contribution to the playing field occurred in the late 1920s when he reworked the original 1917-vintage 18-hole course. During World War II an expansion of the airport and its runways necessitated that the club give up half of the course, and it has been a 9-hole test ever since. In its current incarnation, three of Assiniboine Golf Club s nine holes feature an extra green and each of the 9 holes has two sets of tee boxes. On six of the holes, the greens have two cups. Because of the different teeing areas and greens, players who go around twice at Assiniboine Golf Club enjoy variety akin to an 18-hole course. Players typically aim for white flags on their first nine and red flags on their second go around. Assiniboine Golf Club is exceptionally flat and easy to walk. The generous fairways are lined by trees. You ll find a few bunkers and a creek, but otherwise there s not a lot of trouble on this user-friendly playing field. Assiniboine Golf Club s holes head off in a variety of directions with a mix of straightaways and doglegs. The second teeing area and green on the 5th/14th hole changes a dogleg-right test into a straightaway hole. At nine holes, the par-36 routing extends from 3,000 yards to 3,300 yards from three tee decks. As an 18-hole circuit, Assiniboine Golf Club maxes out at 6,418 yards. The only practice facility at the club is a putting green. The clubhouse has a pro shop and you can enjoy a beer after your game. Play at the club winds down quickly in October as the facility prepares for winter. For a fun round that has been delighting Winnipeg golfers for well over a century, make a tee time to play Assiniboine Golf Club.
